Frequently Asked Questions
Will I groom from day 1?
Absolutely. After a short induction we get you cracking! Clipping, scissoring, bathing and handling all from day 1. Our courses are hands-on so you’re not just watching professional groomers work, you’re actually grooming from the day you arrive. However, there’s no need to be nervous – we’re right by your side guiding you every step of the way.
Do I need to bring my own equipment?
No, all equipment is supplied for the duration of your course. We suggest not buying any equipment until you begin your chosen course, that way we can show you what you will require. Course prices DO NOT include an equipment pack for learners to take home. However, we will inform you of what you will need to buy and how to obtain discounts through The Paw Pad at the UK’s leading suppliers once you begin your course.
Do I need to supply my own dog models to practice on?
No. We have an extensive database of dog models for learners to work with during their training. You will groom a wide variety of breeds, fur types, temperaments and sizes whilst you learn with us.
How often do the courses run?
Year round, to demand.
I want to run my own dog grooming business but don’t really know how. Is that something you can advise about?
Absolutely. We give you a pack on your first day with loads of information from how much to charge, where to get equipment, how to record client details, and much more. Each learner will also receive a free dog first aid DVD for peace of mind.
How much written work is there?
That is completely up to the individual. We will give you a sheet for each breed you groom so notes can be made. Some people make notes, some don’t; everyone retains information differently. We will go through the notes you make with you to ensure they are correct.
Can you advise on accommodation options?
Yes, while taking one of our courses you will need to find a place to stay nearby. Check out our accommodation page for some local options.
How big are the classes?
No more than 4 (6) learners at any one time with support and supervision from 2 trainers.
Do I have to take my course in one go or can I spread the dates out?
If you can do a course in a block Monday-Friday that would be the best way to retain the information. However, if this isn’t possible we can discuss some dates to suit but they would have to fall within a month of your start date or you’ll simply forget what you’ve learned. We know that’s not ideal if you work full time, but in the long run this method will benefit you greatly.
What are the hours of the courses?
Courses are Monday to Friday from 10am and run until you finish your dog/s for the day (usually around 4-5pm). We are closed at weekends.
What if I get stuck when I leave?
No need to worry, we are here! Aftercare is included in the price of the course; via phone or email, whenever you may need us.
How do I pay for a course?
The deposit amount for your chosen course can be found in the courses description. Your deposit will hold your chosen course dates. Your remaining balance payment is due 7 days before your start date as the dog models will have been booked in for you. You can pay by bank transfer, credit/debit card or by cheque, just let us know what suits you.
PLEASE NOTE: DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE
Do you offer payment plans?
As long as your deposit is paid, you are welcome to pay as much as you like, whenever you like, as long as the full balance has been paid the week before your start date.
Can I bring my own dog to groom during my training period?
If you would like to use your own dog as one of your grooming models just let us know when you book so we can fit them into your schedule. Please ensure you give us plenty of notice so that we can fit them in.
Where Are You Based?
All training is held at our fully-equipped, custom-built salon in Cheshire. Our address is The Paw Pad Dog Daycare and Grooming School, Unit 10, Wincham Lane, Northwich, Cheshire CW9 6DE.
